Volunteers Experience the Amazon Conservation Project in Peru | The Great Projects

I would say that the best thing about
being conservation intern is just being here it’s just insanely beautiful I’ve
always been really interested in animals and I absolutely love being in nature
and this internship seems to be a really good way for me to start a possible
career path When I found this internship I was like yes this is the
one I want to do when I arrived at the MLC I definitely expected minimal
standards but the accommodation is absolutely amazing and the jungle is
literally ten meters from your doorstep it is the most beautiful place here So a general day
of a conservation intern can vary quite a lot but in general in the
morning you have breakfast at 7:00 and then you get ready to go out onto the
field before you go out you stay you get briefed on what you’re gonna be doing
and then you go out into the forest, and the hikes can be quite tough sometimes but
it’s definitely worth it I was instantly drawn in by the butterfly survey, you put
three different butterfly traps in three different size types, so you go out you
take down the traps and you check the butterflies that have been brought by
the bait in those traps and then you have a book that has all of the species in it
and you can identify them through that and I just absolutely loved the insane
amount of species that you find in all of the traps When you have a full day
out in the field you sit and have your lunch buy a stream which is like really
nice Once you go back from the field you
enter all the data that you’ve collected and then in the afternoon you might have
a workshop for example you had a human disturbance workshop, another great thing
is that once a week you have a mentor meeting or you basically discuss like
your objectives for the week and how your assignments going and stuff and
that’s always really good The amount that you learn here is absolutely
incredible there is a lot of coursework it’s pretty intense but when you can
actually apply that knowledge when you’re out in the field and you can
identify a species of monkey or a species of bird it is just the best
feeling ever And then after your days finished it’s time for dinner
the food here is delicious you do get rice three times a day but the stuff
that goes with it it’s really varied and delicious also don’t worry if you have
any dietary requirements I’m vegan and they make a really big effort for me so
don’t stress You get dessert twice a week which is amazing and hot chocolate
basically everyday and even though I know most of the time it’s like 35
degrees here when it gets below 20 that is classed as cold and you’re sat on
your jumpers and hot chocolate is a definite benefit but yeah being here is
just one of the most amazing experiences so if you’re interested in animals
interested in nature interested in conservation then I suggest that you
come and do something like this for sure yeah I would a hundred percent recommend
this to other people this will probably be the best thing you’ve ever done
